Kate Bornstein: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us

Kate's autobiographical interactive signature piece has been most requested for a broad audience. It's Postmodern Gender 101 with a comic twist. Kate performs and speaks both the 60 minute and 90 minute versions of this piece in the unique style she calls edutainment. "It's like Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego," she says, "only it's What In the World is Kate Bornstein."

Keynote Address

Kate has keynoted local, national, and international conferences at schools, not-for-profit organizations, and businesses. Each keynote is crafted with the specific audience in mind, and subjects have ranged widely, from America's Bully Culture to The Future of the LGBT Movement to Art, Sex, and Spirituality. Contact Kate to see if she might be the right keynote speaker for your event.

PRIDE Before We Fall

Sexual preference, gender identity, and self identification have grown increasingly apart from the cultural mores that held them all so closely bound together. "The definitions of queer and straight, for example, are shifting," Kate maintains, "There's an increasing number of straight lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgendered people in the world; and there's an equal increase in the presence of more "queer" heterosexuals." So, what is there to be proud of? How about the human spirit? Ideal talk for LGBTQ celebrations and events open to the non-LGBTQ communities.

Come Out, Come Out, Whatever You Are

Originally written for Kate's appearance at the Texas State Fair on National Coming Out Day, this piece addresses the pressures and needs that attend coming out at home, on the campus, and in the workplace as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or any of the other many categories of sex and gender preference and orientation.

Post 9/11 Postmodern Practice

A great talk for both postmodern-savvy and postmodern-newbie audience. National and international priorities and focus have shifted greatly for America since the tragic events of September 11th. Using both poetry and performance, Kate addresses the need for a radical sex-and-gender theory that will compensate for the increasingly right wing sex and gender politics that have become American culture since 9/11. Kate stresses the value of telling each other our life stories, whether we're straight or queer. "We need to listen to each other's stories," says Kate, "each other's beliefs and philosophies if we're going to ever going to begin to resolve the binaries of straight versus queer; conservative versus radical; and at last, us versus them."

Workshops

In addition to her stage and lecture work, Kate is a trained and experienced workshop facilitator. The addition of one or more workshops to her stay with you is bound to liven things up and create a campus-wide buzz of excitement. Here are some of the workshops Kate can do on your campus or in your organization. But if you've got another kind of workshop in mind, Kate is always willing to examine new areas.

New Workshop This Year! Hello, Cruel World: An Outlaw’s Mini-Guide to Survival
Sometimes, whatever it is that gives you the most joy, pleasure or relief also gets you into the deepest trouble, especially when you try to explain it to other people. Like when you love someone you're not supposed to love. Or when the way you express yourself makes other people queasy. As harmless as you feel you're being, people may still think you're bad, wrong or immoral. This is a one or two hour workshop, in which Kate suggests irreverent alternatives to suffering as a 21st Century outlaw. The workshop is based on Kate’s shiny new book, Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws. Click here to download the basic workshop text.

Introduction to Gender Play: A great one-hour to ninety-minute hands-on workshop that provides the participants with the real-time experience of shifting their own gender identities. Very popular with attendees of all backgrounds and interests.

Performing Genders for the Stage: A two-hour workshop designed specifically with the actor in mind.

Gender Performance: The Master Class: A full day of workshops for either actors or transpeople or anyone who really wants to do some serious work performing a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth.

Achieving the Gender-Free Orgasm: Kate's life partner, author and sex educator Barbara Carrellas teaches a ninety-minute workshop during which participants (fully clothed) have the opportunity to explore an honest-to-goodness gender-free orgasm. This is a workshop that can be attended by students of all ages, the adventurous as well as the more faint-of-heart. The workshop is safe, clean, and lots of fun.
